Cost-Saving Ideas For Your Landscape Design
Posted on: 20 October 2021
Designing a custom landscape layout for your home can be really exciting. You get the chance to pick the plants you enjoy most and then integrate them into an outdoor living design that truly suits your needs. The one downfall of custom landscape design is that it can get pricey. Luckily, there are some simple ways to keep costs down.
1. Choose native plants.
The plants alone can really drive up the cost of your landscape design. If you choose a bunch of exotic trees that sell for a few hundred dollars apiece, then before long, you'll be paying thousands just for trees. The most affordable way to landscape is usually to choose plants that are native to your area. They are easier for greenhouses to grow, which means they cost less. They may also be easier for your landscaper to plant. (Your landscaper may not need to do as much soil prep, which will save them time and materials.)
2. Pick one focal-point feature.
Yes, you could deck out your backyard with a few different fountains, a set of stairs, and all sorts of cool hardscapes. But this isn't really necessary if you're on a budget. Choose just one big-time, focal point feature, like a single fountain or koi pond. This will add just enough magnificence to your yard. You can then use more subtle, affordable landscaping around the feature, keeping your overall costs down.
3. Choose a single hard material.
Instead of using bricks in one place, stone in another, and poured concrete in yet another — pick a single hard material to use throughout your landscape design. This way, your landscaper can buy the material in bulk and pass some of those savings on to you. They are also more likely to them install all of that material on the same day at the same time, which can keep costs and labor down.
4. Work with your existing terrain.
Leveling off your yard, or alternatively, building a hill where there was not one previously, is a costly endeavor. If you can instead work with the terrain you currently have, your landscaping will cost a lot less. Instead of "fixing" uneven ground, call attention to it! Put a little sitting area at the top of a hill, or plant some water-loving plants at the bottom of a little valley.
With the tips above, you can enjoy a new landscaping design, but for a lot less. If you have more questions about landscape design, contact a local company like Exigent Design Build.
